Medium & Large format negative scanning services
35mm negatives are from 35mm film and this smaller format was the gateway for consumer photography and mass production of film in an easy to develop and use format. Medium format negatives go up to 4″ x 5″ and everything 4″ x 5″ or above is a large format negative. Your 4″ x 5″ large format negatives are the most common size, made popular by the camera models of the 1930s-1950s. The idea here is that the larger the area, the more detail you can capture and the better the photograph.
If you have 120 or 220 rolls of film, that’s the film type used in medium format cameras and they have up to 32 exposures on a roll. Large format cameras usually needed one sheet per picture which means you need to reload every time you take a shot. Ansel Adams is one of the more famous photographers who used large format negatives almost exclusively. The labor involved made for a more contemplative, carefully-executed shot. If you have medium or large format negatives, somebody put time and money into their creation and our expert team will convert your medium and large format to DVD or USB and upload them to our online platform for easy sharing!

Common questions about medium and large format negatives to digital
What do I do if my 120 film is still in the canister and unexposed?
There are a number of online resources for developing medium and large format film but this is a service we do not offer. If you’re struggling to find the best place to turn your film into medium and large format negatives sending them to an online service will give you room to price shop, just ask them if they do all their work locally!
Are my negatives medium or large format?
This depends on the size. Medium format film is considered any film size up to 4″ x 5″ in color or black and white. Large format negatives are 4″ x 5″ and larger and can be even bigger than 11″ x 14″. If your film has sprockets, has small frame sizes and comes in strips of 4 or 6, these are not medium or large format negatives. These are 35mm negatives and you can read about them here.
Do they make medium and large format anymore?
They do! Medium and large format photography has moved into the digital age and is still used in fine art, advertising, landscape shots and more. They still provide an incredible amount of detail and resolution and have maintained their popularity in their niche markets but not mainstream photography.

“We highly recommend EverPresent – these folks were responsive, thorough, and produced a beautiful product for us! Our project was the creation of digital images from 10 year old negatives (which were of a unique size) – we were advised in regards to what could be done and offered a meeting time. We are from the Boston area and were able to visit the main office where we dropped off our negatives and then returned a couple weeks later to retrieve a “memory stick” with our digital photos. The process was efficient from the start – we emailed our inquiry and then had a conversation via phone due to the unique size of the negatives, then our meeting for drop-off. For anyone in the Boston area, we would suggest you trust EverPresent with your photo needs – they do an excellent job! Thank you, EverPresent!”
