The easiest way to figure this out is to view the labeling on your tape. Your tape will tell you whether or not it’s a Betacam tape or a Betamax tape. If you have a Betacam tape, you may even see more indication of what kind of tape it is. You can reference the logos above for what you should be looking for and click here if you have a BetaCAM tape!

If the original content was just an OK recording, VHS to digital is a better bet because it’s cheaper to transfer this file type. However, if the recording was pristine, particularly on the audio front, the Beta transfer on a HiFi deck is probably worth the upgrade. We can also convert VHS to digital here at EverPresent in addition to converting Betamax to digital.

Some Betamax tapes can go up to 5 hours, and some Betacam tapes can go up to 3 hours, but there are a number of variables around how they were originally recorded that affected how much a Beta tape could record. If you’re wondering how many DVDs you’ll get back when you transfer your Betamax to DVD, we can tell you that our dual layer DVDs hold all but your longest tapes on one DVD.

You certainly can, and we actually offer this as an add-on with our Betamax conversion service. But it’s always best to have a digital backup, as any physical copy can degrade or get lost. Get both here at EverPresent when you convert Betamax to digital.

It mostly comes down to availability. Most websites say they can digitize the four main Beta tape formats, but one of two things ends up happening in many cases:

They only have one previous Betamax-to-DVD converter for each format, especially if it’s a non-US tape.
Many clients say they have a Betamax, which is the most common Beta tape, but actually have a Betacam. For every 10 digitizing providers with a working Betamax deck, there is probably one with a working DigiBeta deck.

So, we highly recommend you get clear on what exactly you have, and be very precise in seeking out quotes. Or, simply convert Betamax to digital here at EverPresent for complete peace of mind. We’ve dealt with hundreds of situations where clients sent a Beta tape to a small local shop or a big national discounter only to have it returned not digitized.

You can drop off your tapes or schedule a free pickup if you’re near one of our local shops on the East Coast. Otherwise, we’ll give you a pre-paid label when you place your order. You package your Betamax tapes and ship them to us. We handle the rest and will deliver your digitized tapes ASAP – along with the original copies. It’s only $24 per tape for your first 10 tapes, and $19 per tape for more than 10 tapes.
