Q: Learn More about everPresent's AI Philosophy

Across all analog formats we use artificial intelligence as a support tool, not a substitute for human expertise. AI assists with stabilization, cleanup, and consistency, allowing our specialists to focus on judgment, quality control, and preservation decisions. We don’t apply the same approach to every format, and we don’t automate simply for speed. Slides demand different care than VHS tapes; audio requires different judgment than film. Each project is reviewed by people who understand the material , the era it came from, and the responsibility that comes with preserving it. Every order reflects the same philosophy: thoughtful technology, human oversight, and respect for the original.

Question 2

How do I watch old MiniDV tapes?

Accepted Answer

You’d need the original MiniDV camcorder or a compatible deck. Then, you’d connect to your TV via RCA/S-Video cables. You could also use the camcorder’s built-in LCD for playback. But these camcorders are becoming more and more elusive, which is why it’s a good time to convert MiniDV to digital.

Question 3

How long do MiniDV tapes last?

Accepted Answer

MiniDV uses metal-evaporated tape, so unfortunately, it degrades faster than the oxide-based formulations (which is common in formats like VHS). These tapes can hold up for 10-20 years in really good storage conditions. That means your tapes could be nearing the end of their life if they’re from the 1990s or early 2000s.

Question 4

How can I convert my MiniDV tapes to digital files?

Accepted Answer

Do you have a working MiniDV camcorder? Connect it to your computer via FireWire (IEEE 1394) if so. You can transfer the footage using capture software since MiniDV is already a digital format on the tape. However, finding a computer with a FireWire port or a Thunderbolt-to-FireWire adapter can be just as difficult as finding a working camcorder. It’s well worth the investment in a professional MiniDV to digital service like EverPresent.

Question 5

Where can I get MiniDV tapes digitized?

Accepted Answer

Right here at EverPresent. We have locations all along the East Coast if you want to drop off your tapes, or you can schedule a free pickup. Otherwise, we’ll send you a pre-paid label so you can ship your tapes directly to our facility for fast, high-quality conversion.

Question 6

How much to convert MiniDV to digital?

Accepted Answer

It’s $24 per tape for the first 10 tapes. A bulk discount applies after that, at which point you’ll pay $19 per tape. You can add HD upscaling for $4 per tape and consider other add-ons like USB/DVD delivery and labeling. We also offer ProResHQ output for professional-grade archiving.

Question 7

What do I get back when I digitize MiniDV with EverPresent?

Accepted Answer

Your original tapes and the digital .mp4 files delivered via the EverPresent app. We provide 60 days of free access to the app for you to see how incredible it is, and many customers choose to continue storing their files in the app for the long haul. Key Moments comes with every order for free, too, so you can effortlessly find highlights in dense footage.

Question 8

How long does it take from start to finish?

Accepted Answer

We complete 80% of our projects within one month, but it all depends on how big a project you send us and our current workload. We’ll give you a more accurate estimate on timeline when you first reach out to get a quote on MiniDV to digital conversion.

Question 9

What if I send in tapes that happen to be blank?

Accepted Answer

We flag blank tapes in the quality report and don’t charge you unfairly for these. This happens pretty often with MiniDV collections since tapes are so old that you may not remember what’s on them, if anything at all.

Question 10

Can you still convert tapes that are damaged?

Accepted Answer

We can handle casing repairs, tape splicing, mold cleaning, sticky shed treatment, and time base correction in-house. This level of service is why we’re the #1 place to convert MiniDV to digital.
