Maine History Photo Spotlight:
The Year Maine Burned
The above is a photo of The Malvern, a high-end hotel that was destroyed along with four others during the Maine fires of 1947. This unfortunate event earned the moniker of “The Year Maine Burned.” Nine entire towns were wiped out, along with a quarter of a million acres of forest. Firefighters attempted to put out nearly 200 fires between October 13 to October 27, 1947.
A year that lacked rainfall and had dry temperatures contributed to this disaster. Add the fact that Maine in 1947 was 90% forested land and this was a recipe for disaster. Strong winds pushed smoke and embers all across the state. The photo above of a farmland in Newfield, Maine shows a glimpse of how much the flames were spreading.
The fires ultimately destroyed half of Acadia National Park and transformed that terrain forever. Much of the spruce and fir was wiped out from the fires; oak, aspen, and birch would replace the former. With spruce and fir, the forest would display a green hue; with the replacements it displays the typical autumn colors of orange, yellow, and red.
