RHODE ISLAND’S IMPACT ON MODERN VISUAL MEDIA

Photojournalist
War time photojournalist Al Rockoff was born in Pawtucket, RI in 1946. He became notable in his career of photojournalism particularly for his coverage of the Vietnam war. Though it’s said he did not support the depiction, he was portrayed by actor John Malkovich in the Academy Award winning war drama ‘The Killing Fields’ (1984).
Harry Callahan
Renowned photographer, photo essayist, and former Providence resident Harry Callahan (1912-1999) taught for 15 years at the Rhode Island School of Design. His diverse body of work includes street photography, portraiture, and architecture.
Silent Film
In 1914 the little known and short lived Eastern Film Corporation established its headquarters and film studio in Providence. It was at this location that some of the country’s first silent pictures were filmed. At its peak in 1915 it employed over 80 workers including actors, technicians, and directors. During the winter of the same year the company relocated to Florida. Various production companies continued to film at the Providence studio’s location through 1919.
The Father of the Western
Rhode Island born Thomase H. Ince was significant in his contribution to the modern film industry helping to set the stage for Hollywood film production as we know it today. Born in Newport in 1880, Ince helped to create the first major Hollywood studio facility. He went on to become the first mogal to build his own film studio and helped develop the now integral role of film producer which did not previously exist. By the time of his death at the early age of 44 he was already credited with making over 800 western films.
The Farrely Brothers
The comedy film directing Farrely brothers grew up in Cumberland, Rhode Island. These are the directors that were responsible for late 90s early 2000s goofball comedy classics like Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary.
Moonrise Kingdom
Did you know Wess Anderson’s period comedy Moonrise Kingdom was filmed at locations around the state? Filming sites included areas around Narragansett Bay, Fort Wetherill, Trinity Church, Yawgoon Scout Reservation, and Ballard Park in Newport. The offbeat and beautifully assembled film depicts an unconventional love story set at a 1960s summer camp in New England.
